Tips for Poetry Searches

These are the searches that I like to try in databases or OneSearch:

  • Author + "name of poem"
  • Author + "name of collection poem was published in"
  • Author + theme (love, mourning)
  • Author + technique (rhyme, structure)
  • Author + movement (Confessional poetry, Harlem Renaissance)

Searching in Wofford's print book collection can also be productive. Locate a book about your poet in OneSearch or ask a librarian for help. Go to the section where the book is located, then look at that book and nearby books. Check the table of contents and the index for mentions of your poem or collection.
