24 August 2022: "Any Further Escalation of the Situation [in Ukraine] Could Lead to Self-Destruction," Says UN Chief (10:18)In his remarks to the Security Council, Secretary-General António Guterres said that despite progress on the humanitarian front, “fighting in Ukraine shows no signs of ending, with new potential areas of dangerous escalation appearing.” He specified that “any actions that might endanger the physical integrity, safety, or security of the nuclear-power plants are simply unacceptable. Any further escalation of the situation could lead to self-destruction.” He also warned that if the war continues, it could disrupt the distribution of fertilizer from Ukraine and Russia around the world, which disruption could lead to a shortage in the world's food supply in 2023.
