The first part of your project is to find an industry to explore for your project. I suggest choosing three different industries so that you can review the industry reports and then choose one that interests you the most.
Find the NAICS Codes for industries you are interested in researching. Use the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) website to find Industries at a Glance Indexes - Alphabetical Index to see what industries are tracked by the BLS. If you are stuck you can look at ideas in the "Browse Industries" tab.
Be sure to note the NAICS codes and industry names to look up in the industry databases.
Use library resources to access reliable industry data, including market reports, company profiles, and financial trends. Statista and IBISWorld provide industry-specific information to help you complete your assignment. Statista provides statistics and visual data and IBISWorld provides industry analysis, market trends, and can show county level data for market size and economic data.
1.Go to Statista and search using the keyword that describes your industry, not the NAICS code. Ex. search "coffee shops" instead of 722515.
2. Use the filters on the right to limit your results to a specific country. I chose United States.
3. Narrow the content type. I limited my search to four types (reports, topics, statistics, market insights)
4. Look for editorial picks to begin your review of the results. Here are my results after using the filters.
In my example, open with the first report "Coffee Shops and cafes in the U.S. - statistics and facts. This report gives you the industry overview, key players, consumers, and spotlights the industry leader, Starbucks. To find the entire report click on the right side "Explore this report" for options to download the slides as PDF or PPT slides to use in your assignment.
Now do this again with the next report "Coffee: market data & analysis." This is the market insight report. It will give you information about growth, revenue and volume.
1. Go to IBISWorld.
2. Make sure the country is set to US then search for your NAICS code or industry keyword.
3. Then choose US Industry Reports that match your industry the best. When I put the code for coffee shops, 722515, the suggested reports are for Coffee & Snack Shops in the US or Bakery Cafes in the US. It would be useful to look at both the overall industry and specialized reports. Both reports will give you insight into the industry climate.
4. Explore the report for specialized industry data such as SWOT analysis, state industry reports, and lists of questions you may be asked about during an interview in the industry. Use the Chapters section on the left to review each portion of the report. Focus on the Key Takeaways, Geographic Information, and Competitive Forces sections to get information for your project.
Once you review the reports and make sure you have resources to complete the assignment, think again which industry is more interesting. Having a topic you are interested in makes assignments more engaging and enjoyable.
Library Resources Recap:
1. Find industries you are interested in researching using the Bureau of Labor Statistics website.
2. Locate and download the reports from Statista and IBIS World.
3. Use the charts and data from the reports in your presentation.
4. Create a bibliography at the end of your presentation.
