Benjamin Hubert, Jr. (Oct. 30, 1840-Nov. 12, 1868) was the son of Benjamin Hubert, Sr. (May 15, 1815-Sept. 15, 1867) a Lawrence County, Mississippi native.
On June 3, 1861, Benjamin Hubert, Jr. enlisted in Co. E, 6th Louisiana Infantry Volunteers. He reported that he was 18 and a native of Texas, lived in New Orleans, and worked as a clerk. He was assigned to the brigade’s headquarters as a clerk for the adjutant general, which he held until he was “discharged by order of the Secretary of War” in 1863.
Letitia (“Lettie”) M. Bailey (Hubert Hart) (Mar. 5, 1843-Sept. 25, 1914) was the daughter of Dr. Rice Garland Bailey (1912-Apr. 12, 1893) and his first wife, Amanda Thomas Wingfield Bailey (Nov. 1801-May 30, 1849). On July 6, 1860, the census enumerated her in the household of her sister Ann E. Bailey Evans (b. 1834) and Ann’s son, aged four. Letitia owned $100.00 worth of personal property and her real estate worth $1,000.00 (Ann’s was evaluated at $1,500.00.) They resided in Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle County, Virginia.
Letitia Bailey and Benjamin Hubert, Jr. married on Oct. 26, 1862 in Albermarle County, Virginia. Following Hubert's discharge from military service in 1863, they went to Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, where Benjamin Hubert, Sr. resided.
Benjamin Hubert, Sr. died of yellow fever on Sept. 15, 1867—only eight days before his second daughter was born. Benjamin Hubert, Jr. survived his father by only 14 months, dying at Brazos on Nov. 12, 1868. Letitia and he had two daughters: Letitia Anna Hubert Witt (May 13, 1865-Oct. 15, 1941) and Bennella Baily Hubert Mayfield (Sept. 23, 1867-Feb. 1, 1945).
On Nov. 19, 1873 in Richmond, Virginia, Letitia married Henry Ruffner Hart (Feb. 17, 1830-Oct. 22, 1878), with whom she had two sons. She is buried with Henry Hart in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond with her four children.
